Sappho – Episode 2

Living long before Socrates, Sappho is the earliest recorded female philosopher, and one of the earliest recorded philosophers, period. Her lyric poetry gives us insight into ancient Greece, and is an important window into the earliest female ethics. I start this episode with a brief history of ancient Greece and Sappho’s place within it. You’ll also hear a translation of one of her few remaining complete poems, as well as a discussion of why her contributions to philosophy are so important and deserve more concentrated focus in our modern consideration of the history of philosophy.
